Background of the Study

Start-ups play a critical role in driving innovation, job creation, and economic diversification in emerging economies like Nigeria. However, the success of start-ups, particularly in rural areas such as Illela Local Government Area (LGA) in Sokoto State, depends heavily on access to resources such as finance, infrastructure, and government support. In recent years, the Nigerian government has introduced various programs and initiatives aimed at supporting the growth of start-ups, including funding opportunities, training programs, and policy reforms. Despite these efforts, many start-ups in Illela continue to face challenges related to access to finance, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of business support services (Usman, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the impact of government support on start-ups in Illela LGA, focusing on how government interventions have influenced the growth and sustainability of local start-ups. The research will assess the effectiveness of existing support mechanisms and identify areas for improvement in fostering a more conducive environment for entrepreneurship.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although the Nigerian government has implemented several programs aimed at supporting start-ups, many businesses in Illela LGA still face significant challenges in accessing financial resources, infrastructure, and technical support. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of government support initiatives in Illela and determine whether these programs have had a meaningful impact on the growth of local start-ups.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of government support on the growth of start-ups in Illela LGA.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of government policies and initiatives in supporting entrepreneurship in Illela.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by start-ups despite the availability of government support.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How has government support impacted the growth of start-ups in Illela LGA?

  2. What is the effectiveness of government policies and initiatives in supporting entrepreneurship in Illela?

  3. What challenges do start-ups face despite the availability of government support in Illela LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Government support has significantly contributed to the growth of start-ups in Illela LGA.

  2. Government policies and initiatives have been effective in promoting entrepreneurship in Illela LGA.

  3. Despite government support, start-ups in Illela LGA face challenges such as inadequate funding and infrastructure.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it will provide valuable insights into the role of government support in fostering entrepreneurship in Illela LGA. The findings will inform policymakers and development agencies on how to improve existing programs and create more favorable conditions for start-up growth. Additionally, the study will contribute to the broader discussion on how government interventions can enhance the entrepreneurial ecosystem in rural Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on start-ups in Illela LGA and assess the impact of government support over the past five years. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and challenges in accessing information on government programs.
